About Hockey India
Hockey India is the governing body to direct and conduct all activities for both men’s and women’s hockey in India. It is recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India as the sole body responsible for promoting Hockey in India.
Headquartered in New Delhi, Hockey India was established in 2009 after the Indian Hockey Federation was disaffiliated in 2008 by the Indian Olympic Association. The Indian Hockey Federation conducted all activities of the Indian Men’s team whereas the Indian Women’s team was directed by the Indian Women’s Hockey Federation.
The IOA subsequently formed Ad-hoc Committees to look after the various affairs of the suspended IHF. Under the leadership of the ad-hoc committee members including then IOA President Suresh Kalmadi, present IOA and FIH President Dr. Narinder Dhruv Batra, present IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta, Mohd. Mushtaque Ahmad, Olympian Hockey player Aslam Sher Khan etc. a new body was constituted, known as Hockey India. Further, each state in the country witnessed formation of a reformed state hockey unit affiliated to State Olympic Associations, of which Hockey Uttarakhand was a founding member.
The newly formed Hockey India was established on 20th May, 2009 and was constituted as the governing body to direct and conduct all activities for both Men’s and Women’s hockey in India. HI is affiliated to the International Hockey Federation (FIH), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF). Committed to the development of Hockey in the country, Hockey India with the assistance of Sports Authority of India and Department of Sports, Government of India, trains players at sub-junior, junior and senior levels. The governing body engages in coaching the coaches with International standard certification programs, educates and equips technical officials and umpires to find a foothold in the international arena, provides world-class infrastructure and international exposure for the players besides the regular international competitions. Hockey India also pioneered in bringing top International hockey events to India such as the FIH Men’s World Cup in 2010 and 2018, FIH Champions Trophy in 2014, FIH Junior Men’s World Cup in 2016, FIH Hockey World League Final in 2017 as well as the FIH Olympic Qualifiers in 2019. With its vision to popularize the game and constantly promote it, Hockey India is dedicated to getting our national teams (both men and women) into the top three in the world.
